Delhi Rains: Rain is wreaking havoc in many parts of North India including Delhi-NCR. Roads have become ponds, rivers are in spate, many bridges have been washed away due to the strong current of water. Along with the general public in Delhi, water has also entered the houses of MPs. Due to waterlogging, long jams are being seen at many places. Due to incessant rains in Delhi, a holiday has been declared for schools on Monday (July 10).
Meanwhile, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department of the Delhi government has issued a flood alert after more than 1 lakh cusecs of water was released into the Yamuna river from Hathinikund barrage in Haryana. The water level of the Yamuna river in Delhi is rising and it is expected to cross the danger mark of 205.33 meters on Tuesday.
Yamuna river water level rising
According to the flood monitoring portal of the Central Water Commission (CWC), the water level of Yamuna at Old Railway Bridge was 203.18 meters at 1 pm on Sunday, while the danger level is 204.5 meters. The CWC said that the water level is expected to rise up to 205.5 meters between 11 am and 1 pm on Tuesday.
41 year record broken in Delhi
Delhi recorded 153 millimeters (mm) of rain in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Sunday. Which is the highest rainfall since 1982 in a single day in July. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert, warning of moderate rain. About 37,000 people live in areas near the Yamuna river in Delhi. The situation is likely to worsen after water is released from Haryana.
Reminisces of 1978 and 2010
Thousands of people had to leave their homes due to this flood. According to Aaj Tak, in 1978, the level of Yamuna reached the mark of 207.49 meters on the iron bridge. After this, the level of Yamuna has crossed the mark of 207 meters twice more. Yamuna’s water level crossed 207.11 meters in 2010 and 207.32 meters in 2013.
